We're uniting with StandUp for Kids to champion accessible self-care for all.
We’re proud to be partnering with our friends at StandUp For Kids and 9 hair salons across the Unites States to launch Hair Proud – the first program to champion accessible self-care to help grow confidence amongst young people experiencing homelessness.
Currently 4.2 million young people in America are experiencing homelessness and 69% of those are affected by mental health issues and lack access to basic hygienic care and services. As a company committed to standing up for all young people, we knew we had to do something.
This is why for the month of March, we will be working with salons across the country to offer free cut services to any young homeless people.

MARQUEISHA “KEKE” BAIERS
meet keke
"I’m a spoken word artist and poet, who has experienced homelessness from a young age. I was homeless with my mother, then ran away at 15 years old to fend for myself on the streets of Hollywood. During that time, I met film makers of the documentary American Street Kid, spotlighting the epidemic we have with kids on the streets our country.
With the help of non-profit Stand Up For Kids, and through sharing my story with the world, my life has changed in the most positive ways. I was featured poet in the film Summertime, which featured at the Sundance Music Festival. I’ve performed at the Women Across America conferences, and has had the honor of performing for the likes of Angelina Jolie, Hillary Clinton, Freida Pinto, and countless others.
Working with StandUp For Kids has helped me through my lowest points. It all starts with feeling empowered to be anything you want to be, regardless of your background. Experiencing housing insecurity can make it difficult to prioritize yourself and your wellness. A program like A Cut Above makes that self-care accessible, and it goes a long way both internally and externally."

the road to self love
The first time I pressed my hair myself I called my mom and apologized
After hours of arms stretched out and bent back I was still left with half my hair still tangled in the roots of my ancestors
My mom just laughed for she had warned me about this day
The day I would feel generations in my fingers
The day I would learn that my hair was a complex map
I broke the comb once and shaved my head
Again I called my mom
She told me that I was being reborn
Honestly I just thought it was anxiety
Until I started to feel the new traditions
The new memories
The new me growing
I didn't always appreciate my hair and what she was capable of
And now I don't just stand proud
I stand HAIR PROUD
Everyone deserves to feel hair proud
